If you suffer an on-the-job injury and are unable to return to work in the near future, you may assume that you qualify for workers’ compensation benefits.

While you may be right, here’s something you should remember: It’s not out of the question that your claim could be denied.

You should understand why workers’ compensation claims are denied. Here are some of the more common reasons:

  • You did not report the injury to your company in a timely manner
  • You did not file an initial claim in a timely manner
  • Your employer disputes that you suffered the injury on the job
  • You did not receive medical treatment for your injury or illness
  • You are unable to prove that you were injured on the job

To protect against these things, it’s important that you immediately report any accident to your supervisor. Along with this, make sure you receive medical attention.

If you then realize that you are unable to return to work, such as at the discretion of your medical team, you can move forward with filing a workers’ compensation claim.

Should you receive a denial letter, you’ll then want to learn more about filing an appeal. By taking the right steps, you may be able to have the initial decision overturned, thus allowing you to receive benefits in the near future.

No one dreams of the day when they will be able to make a workers’ compensation claim, as this means they have been injured. Even so, you could find yourself in this position. Don’t delay in taking the right steps toward receiving the compensation you deserve.
