Why do workplace slip and falls happen

Regardless of your profession or industry, it goes without saying that you walk quite a bit every day. Even if you’re only walking from the parking lot to your desk, a safety hazard could pop up at any point.

If you don’t know why workplace slip-and-fall accidents occur, you are more likely to be injured in one of these.

Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Slippery working surface, often due to the presence of a wet or oil substance
  • Debris that is left on the ground
  • Uneven walking surfaces, such as a sidewalk leading into a building
  • Bunched floor mats or carpeting
  • Depressions or holes in any walking surface
  • Defective stairs, such as those that are not the same height

There are times when a person slips and is able to catch him or herself. When this happens, they realize just how lucky they are.

Conversely, there are times when a slip also leads to a fall. While an injury doesn’t always happen when a person falls to the ground, it’s possible that this could be the final outcome.

There are many injuries associated with a workplace slip and fall, with some of the more serious including concussion and broken bones.

If you are injured in a workplace slip-and-fall accident, stay where you are and call for help. Attempting to move may worsen your condition.

Once you receive treatment and consult with your medical team, you may find that you are unable to return to work right away. In this case, it may make sense to file a workers’ compensation claim.
