What should you expect after a hernia surgery

If you suffer a hernia, such as from lifting heavy items at your place of employment, you shouldn’t hesitate to consult with a medical professional. Letting this problem linger is only going to cause more trouble in the long run.

Fortunately, a hernia surgery can put this in the past once and for all. That being said, you must know what to expect after the procedure is complete.

In most cases, it takes three weeks to recover from open hernia repair surgery. Even so, you are only able to resume light activity at that time. It typically takes six to eight weeks to make a full recovery, allowing you to return to your previous level of exercise.

If you jump back into things too early, you could cause damage to the surgical site, thus leading to the need for an additional surgery or rest.

An infection can also slow down the recovery process. This typically results in a fever, bleeding through your bandage and/or a swollen testicle. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

If you suffered a lifting injury at work, such as a hernia, you should report the incident to your employer and then receive medical treatment. From there, if you are unable to return to your job, learn more about the workers’ compensation system.

By filing a claim for workers’ compensation benefits, you won’t have nearly as much financial stress during this difficult time of your life. Instead, you can receive money to help you get by as you attempt to make a full recovery.
