Preventing workplace accidents starts with you

There can be many causes of workplace accidents, but one you’re likely to hear about in Omaha is a workplace explosion. While working with grains and fine dust, it’s more likely for explosions and fires to occur.

As a worker in an environment where an explosion is possible, one thing you can do is to learn more about what causes accidents in the first place. You may be surprised at how easy it is to prevent a serious accident from taking place.

There are three main factors involved in workplace accidents. They include:

  • Neglecting safety protocols
  • Not managing the space adequately
  • Taking shortcuts

Each of these could lead to injuries if they impact the workplace on the whole. For example, if someone is working with flames and neglects to check the dust levels before doing so, they could accidentally set off a grain-related explosion without intending to do so. Likewise, taking shortcuts, like opening a window to air out a room instead of using the extraction fan, could end up causing a buildup of dangerous materials in the room just because someone didn’t want to take the time to turn on the fan.

Avoiding injuries and workplace accidents comes down to everyone working together for the safety and security of those on the job. Follow procedures to the letter each and every time. If you note that a coworker is developing bad habits and not cleaning up after themselves or creating hazards, report those actions. Everyone has a responsibility to keep the work environment safe.
