Workplace injuries: Good lifting techniques protect your back

On Behalf of | Oct 11, 2019 | Firm News, Workplace Injuries |

Most people in the Omaha workforce must lift and move heavy objects either frequently or occasionally. Even office workers must lift heavy items from time to time. Workers in other industries like construction and warehousing must lift large and heavy items frequently. Many workplace injuries in Nebraska occur because employees do not know how to lift these objects properly.

Responsible employers provide their staff with regular safety training to help them learn proper lifting techniques. This helps to cut down on worker absences as well as workplace injuries. To help refresh your memory, review the proper lifting strategy outlined below.

Preparing: Anytime you have to lift a heavy item and move it to another spot, prepare yourself by making sure your pathway is free of obstacles. It is also wise to test the object’s weight before you lift.

Lifting: Create a wide and stable support base by keeping your legs shoulder-width apart. Squat down (do not bend) with back straight, eyes ahead and lift the item slowly, keeping it close to your body.

Moving: Holding the item close to your body at the level of your navel, let your feet and hips lead the way to the item’s destination. Once there, squat down as you did when lifting, and set the object down carefully.

With or without training, workplace injuries from lifting can still occur. Always remember that you have the right to file a workers’ compensation claim to alleviate the financial hardships that typically accompany an injury. If you have difficulty filing your claim or if you receive a denial, consider taking your case to an attorney for assistance accessing the benefits you deserve.
